I’m all about a good red lipstick, mostly because I’m lazy. Seriously, even if you’re running late and don’t have any time to throw on a full face of makeup adding a pop of color through a red lip can give you the appearance of being completely pulled together regardless of how much sleep you’ve actually had. It’s taken me a LOT of experimenting to figure out which reds look the best with my complexion (and trust me, wearing the wrong shade of red can be painfully embarrassing while looking through pics of the previous night out).
When it comes to shade, there are a few tricks that you can use to help you pick the red lipstick that will best compliment you…first up, my fair skinned gals. If you have skin on the pale side, I’d recommend a lipstick that leans more towards the orange or coral side…it’ll help brighten your complexion and warm up your already cooler complexion. Does this mean you can’t go for a darker, more vampy lipstick? Of course not, but if you do opt for a shade with more blue undertones then perhaps consider the intensity. A REALLY vamp-tastic lipstick (think Diva from MAC) will wash you out and look pretty jarring to the rest of the world.
Now, if you have darker skin then you have a little more flexibility on what shade of lipstick works (but then again I LOVE women with darker skin…something about wanting what you can’t have, right?) Opt for a shade with blue or almost plum undertones, like a cranberry or crimson for a perfectly flattering lipstick shade.
In order to help you all sift through the vast world of red lipstick, I’ve rounded up my favorites from MAC for you all below along with a few tips and tricks to application. Don’t forget, lipstick (and makeup in general!) is meant to be fun…if you reach for a tube and decide it isn’t the shade for you, just wipe it off and try another. Life goes on and is way too short for you to worry about something like if the red lipstick your wearing washes you out or not. Ain’t nobody got time for all of that!
1. Lady Danger, $16
First up, Lady Danger is a perfect choice for fair-skinned ladies as it’s a super bright coral-red lipstick. It’s completely matte, which can be slightly harder to pull off but when you pair it with a clear (or tinted) gloss, the color payoff is amazing. I find it a long-wearing lipstick that leaves a stain behind as it wears off over the course of six-ish hours. A great choice for someone who isn’t afraid of BRIGHT!
2. All Fired Up, $16
All Fired Up is a great lipstick choice for someone with slightly darker skin as it has fuchsia undertones. Another bright color, this lipstick is matte and completely opaque. One swipe will last forever (I’m talking 7+ hours forever) and also leaves a nice stain as it wears off. My only complaint for this lipstick is that it can be pretty drying on the lips…pro tip? Exfoliate your lips gently first and touch up with a little clear lip balm throughout the night for the perfect pout.
3. Brave Red, $16
One of my newest MAC addictions, Brave Red is a deep and opaque lipstick that I personally think many skin-tones can pull off flawlessly. The best part about this color is that it isn’t a totally matte finish to the point where your lips are pretty dry throughout the night (like All Fired Up) but it has almost a sheen finish to it. This color is flattering and because of the lipstick’s undertones, it can help make your teeth look nice and white!
4. Lady Bug, $16
We all know that MAC Lady Bug is my go-to failsafe red. I’ve talked about it here enough but to quickly highlight, this lipstick is perfect for any skin-tone and doesn’t wash out my fellow pale girls out there. It has an incredibly long wear time and again, it isn’t totally matte which can be really flattering on the lip.
