Sometimes you just have to get away, and a trip upstate was just what the doctor ordered!
For Christmas, HQ and I made a deal. We agreed that our little apartment didn’t need any more “stuff” and that from now on, our gifts to each other weren’t going to be “things”. Instead, we want to do more things together, from taking trips to doing activities together as a way to build a stronger bond and let’s be real…have more fun!
So, my gift to HQ was a getaway upstate where we would board at a B&B and visit a local distillery for a whiskey-tasting. Not bad, right? Well trust me, we had way more fun than we ever expected given that the B&B was located in a super sleepy little town with literally three bars and four restaurants along a one-block street.
We took off on Friday and hopped in the car, armed with plenty of snacks for the drive. We hit 95 North and took a pit stop to drop a LOT of money at Woodbury Commons before hitting our final destination of Montgomery, New York.
If you’re looking for a cute little place to stay, I definitely recommend The Borland House Bed & Breakfast. Run by a super sweet woman named Anna, the House has old-school charm that you just don’t find anywhere these days. We were ushered up to our room (complete with a private bath) where we dropped our sh*t and promptly took a much-needed nap. Shopping tired you out, guys!
We shook ourselves awake just in time to grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant. Guys, arguably the best part about Montgomery is that everything is walking distance. This means you can drink until you want to fall over and be able to stumble home in literally 5 minutes. I know this, because this is EXACTLY what we went ahead and did haha.
We woke up the next morning (afternoon) just in time for our private cooking class where we learned how to make potato Gnocchi, homemade pesto, and a bomb kale salad. If you ever want to have a really good time with someone, take them to a cooking class. Trust me, you can’t NOT have fun while up to your elbows in Gnocchi dough!
Not the prettiest shot but trust me. So bomb.
Then, it was off to Tuthilltown Distillery for a very cool tour and tasting session. I’ll be honest with you, HQ and I like to drink but typically we’re wine people. Whiskey Tasting has been on our bucket list for basically forever, so we were excited to finally be able to cross that bad boy off the list. Unfortunately? Whiskey isn’t for us. The tour of the facility was SO COOL, but we both agreed that whiskey is a little uh….aggressive on the palate for our tastes.
That being said, I definitely recommend the tasting because everyone who works there is SUPER knowledgable about the product and great at introducing newbies to the wonders of whiskey.
The distillery has a great little restaurant next door that offers decent food at an affordable price, but go for the drinks. The craft cocktails are out of this WORLD. I’m a total margarita girl, and trust me when I say I had the best margarita I’ve ever had (and it was also like, $8!) and HQ LOVED his gin choice. Definitely check it out if you’re looking for a bite, but remember to make reservations because it gets booked up super quick. Also- the cell service in the area is surprisingly really crappy so I’d recommend driving and bringing a designated driver along with you because Uber isn’t a thing.
We made it back to Montgomery before 9PM and weren’t quite ready to call it a night, so we wandered over to a local bar where we proceeded to befriend the NICEST girls in the world. In fact, one of them is an esthetician who is known for sugaring, check out her site here and book an appointment if you’re ever in the area!
We poured ourselves into bed around midnight for a totally restful nights sleep. Waking up was significantly easier knowing we had breakfast waiting for us downstairs with strong coffee to cure our hangovers.
Check out this ridiculous frittata, hardcore right?
All in all we had a winning weekend. We made it home just in time to catch the Superbowl, capping off an all-star trip. Never underestimate the power of a little getaway people, time off is good for your soul!
