Guys. I’ve started to exercise again and it’s aiight.
I probably could sound more excited about that statement I guess lol but listen, it’s hard to get back into an exercise routine after routinely putting it off for so long!
Over the past few months, I’ve been going through quite a bit of a personal rediscovery journey. The start of 2017 was rocky (to say the least) and I’ve been taking time to really invest in myself and my own happiness. It definitely isn’t easy to step back from the day-to-day grind and really make an effort to understand why I feel blah, or why I’m just not feeling like I’m taking advantage of the great life that I’ve been blessed with.
I found myself going through the motions, waking up and dragging through a never-ending workday. I’d lost all sense of excitement about my life, and trust me. I used to be the most GUNG-HO human about my job and my hobbies. Over time though, I felt like I was losing myself. I couldn’t remember why I liked going to work every day, and I struggled to understand why what I was doing every morning actually meant something.
I’d never felt so disconnected.
Then one morning in January, I put my foot down and said, “FUCK this, it’s time for a change.” Literally. It was the most ultimate come-to-Jesus moment I think anyone has ever had. The next morning, I re-activated my Weight Watchers account (learn more about my first experience on the program here) and started researching gyms in my area.
I figured a good first step in getting back to me was getting back into a routine of self-love and self-care. I used to be a pretty legit athlete back in the day, and I missed the sense of accomplishment I used to feel after a game or particularly difficult workout.
Cue Hudson River Fitness.
If you’re in the Hoboken, New Jersey area and looking to reboot your fitness routine, I highly recommend you reach out to Ashley. He’s a Dr. of Physical Therapy and owns the gym. Not only are the workouts hard AF, but he’s good about personal instruction, making sure that you’re doing the exercise moves correctly so that you don’t hurt yourself.
I signed up for a 6 week training program that I’m currently halfway-ish through, and I have to tell you. Even though the workouts themselves are great, it’s the routine that I’ve slid into that’s really made a change on my overall psyche. The workout classes I attend are at 6:30AM, meaning I have to be up by 6AM. I am not a morning person (even now I still struggle to wake up) but starting my day earlier and with the success of a hard workout under my belt does WONDERS for your mood throughout the rest of your day.
And so, that brings me to today. I’ve re-discovered my love for health and wellness, and have re-committed myself to putting myself and my own dreams first. I’m going to give it a few more weeks then I’ll share what my morning routine looks like with you all, in case you’re trying to reboot your OWN life as well!
I also just want to take a hot second and say a heartfelt thank you to anyone who has ever happened over to this corner of the Internet.
This blog started off as a school project years ago, and it has continued to evolve through internships, graduation, real world work, and beyond…and the people that take the time to tweet me, leave a comment on my Instagram, or even a comment here about the content that I post really means a lot.
Over the next few weeks, this blog is going to take a little bit of a different direction. In the past I’ve covered everything from beauty tips and tricks to PR tactics & lessons… but I really want to bring you all along on my health and wellness journey as I dig to find the person that I lost over the past few years. That means coming along to every sweaty exercise class I try, to the food that I cook and consume, to the brands and partners I make along the way.
Let me know what other sort of health/wellness topics you’d like me to cover too. Clearly, I’m no expert but if I can take one for the team and make a mistake so you don’t have to… I’m all for it!
And leave me your social handles below, I’m super active on Instagram and would love to follow you!!
