frankly , no . i’m your average ghostly pale blonde-with-blue eyes female that has a great relationship with SPF . i DO tan , however it’s a lengthy process of burn-tan-burn-tan that just all in all is murder on my skin . i had basically resigned myself to a coverup , weird tan lines , and a big brimmed hat during my days at the beach…
…until recently !
as i will soon be leaving on vacation where the beaches are white and the sun is hot , a friend of mine casually mentioned that perhaps i’d want to tan in a bed to get a ‘base tan’ to prevent further sun damage while away where the sun is stronger . i was skeptical about this concept , but thankfully there is an extremely well known and well respected tanning salon nearby that would prove to answer all of my questions for me .
i hopped right on in to The Sun Spa and proceeded to have the best first experience with sunless tanning that i never knew i could have . the entrance to the spa is extremely warm and welcoming , with friendly staff waiting to help you . i had the privilege of meeting the owner himself who started the salon in 1998 , quickly garnering a BOOMING fan base in his local town of Montclair (located in Northern New Jersey).
he started off by asking what my normal sun protection routine is , and of course i was more than happy to answer . we talked for about fifteen minutes about how my skin reacts to sunlight and what i can do to further prevent any damage when in the sun (including a scolding about my sheepishly honest answer of how i generally forget to reapply …. oops . his response was that i was born in the age of technology , therefore i should set a damn alarm on my phone ! no excuses !). he was extremely professional and explained how because of my fair skin , he would tailor the time spent in a machine/ it’s strength to give me a gradual base tan without burning . that means instead of the full 8 or 10 minutes a more sun-friendly person would spend in a bed , he would reduce it to 4 or 5 to see how things go .
i was more than a little apprehensive about this whole tanning thing , and when i mentioned that to him he just laughed and reassured me that i had come to the right place . he walked me down a carpeted hallway , passing numbered rooms on the right and left . we stopped outside of door #3 , as he opened the door i peered inside . what i saw was fairly remarkable . the room was comfortably small , with a large stand up bed in the corner . he walked me through the somewhat involved pre-tanning process; 5 minutes to lotion up with nutrient infused tanning lotion , de-robe to my level of comfort , put on/adjust the eye protection , hit the start button and walk inside the booth . he also had me stand inside the machine while it was still off just so i could get a feel for what i was in for . all in all i felt much more reassured after knowing what to expect .
he then left to set the five minute countdown and i was on my own .
my experience ? it was loud and bright ! fans blew the entire four minutes i was in the bed , helping to keep the light bulbs cool . i’ll be honest the first time did freak me out a bit , only because i wasn’t sure what to expect . the four minutes passed and the lights went out , fans continuing to blow . i stepped out and got dressed , and walked right on out .
the best part of the whole experience was afterwards . he asked me how it went , and said that if it wasn’t for me i could go about my day free of charge . he said he couldn’t fault me if i simply didn’t like the whole experience and i believe that says a lot about a business owner . needless to say , i signed up for a five session package .
in terms of results , over the next five days i experienced NO burning . i had a gradual tan line more prominent after each session and no side effects to speak of . i don’t think i felt any ‘happier’ (as some tanning salons claim that regular tanning can lead to an increase of body appreciation and overall happiness) but i was pleased that i had an even tan for the first time in my life !
i had a fantastic experience mostly due to The Sun Spa and the professionals that were more than happy to help me out . if you are interested in sunless tanning , i really recommend that you do your research . your results directly depend on the reliability of those who are helping you ! The Sun Spa was extremely clean and welcoming , two things that would have directly impacted my decision to stay and tan . i highly recommend them for any tanning you may want to do as they offer both in-bed and spray tanning !
have you ever gone sunless tanning ? what was your experience ?
