i recently happened across an InStyle magazine article raving about the “best inexpensive lipstick” . go ahead , read the article then sit and ponder for a minute .
now , if you’re like me and InStyle is your bible you’re thinking about going to pick up this supposedly fantastic lipstick for a bargain the next time you’re at the drugstore …right ? well i didn’t actually wait , i ran out and picked up the Cover Girl Lip Perfection in Fairytale (the “universally flattering” coral color) and popped that sucker right on my lips .
i hated it . i tried it the next day when i was in a better mood and i still hate it .
i was so BUMMED OUT ! InStyle has never done me wrong before ! convinced that maybe i was just that one shade of human being that this lipstick DOESN’T look good on , i rang up my mother Darlene (see her blog here) and had her try it on . SAME RESULT ! it was wildly garish in color and extremely drying to the lips ! we both agree that starting from the outside and working in , this lipstick just doesn’t do it for either of us .
Retailing at around $8 , this drugstore lipstick is a bit on the expensive side . i can easily work past that though if i am impressed by formulation or packaging even , unfortunately , this lipstick fails on both of those fronts as well . i found the packaging cheap and light , although as one saving grace i do generally like lipsticks that show the color on the bottom like this one does . i also found that the formulation was extremely drying and smelled a bit like play-doh (?) . i’m sure the drying aspect could be remedied with a lip balm or gloss on top , however i simply just wasn’t impressed enough with the lipstick itself to even try that . the worst part was (for me) that when i tried taking the color off , it had stained my lips so permanently that i had to sugar scrub it off . even then there was still enough residue around my lips that it looked like i had been drinking fruit punch for days .
now , i’m not the kind of person who judges a line by a single product (particularly if i dislike the color that i chose initially) so i will be picking up another tube in a different color possibly more flattering on me . THAT BEING SAID . i was a little annoyed with InStyle . i understand the marketing aspect of advertising the color as universally flattering but … don’t advertise that if it’s not true ! if i can find two people with two different skin tones entirely that the color doesn’t look so hot on then perhaps Fairytale is NOT universally flattering after all . humph .
what do you guys think ? have you tried this shade yet ? how does it look on your skin ??
please let me know in the comments section what you think , i’d really like to hear what your experience has been with the Cover Girl Lip Perfection line and if it’s worth grabbing another color .
