Hello Monday, how are we all doing out there today?
I’ve managed to sleep through my first alarm, slip in the shower, and forget my lunch while racing out the door to work…so that’s how my day has been going.
I kid, I kid. Mornings definitely aren’t the highlight of my day (I won’t lie to you all about that) but I’ve come up with a little routine that has managed to make my life significantly more bearable now that I have to be awake and functioning at a desk before 9am. I learned pretty quickly during my first week that how you wake up can totally set the tone of the day…and that taking the time to actually let your body wake up before jumping out of bed is so totally underrated.
For those who missed the memo that I wrote EONS ago because I’ve neglected you all for so long, I got a job! A real job. A job-y job. Where I show up and get paid twice a month. The only difference between me and the rest of the adult people on the planet is that I’m actually obsessed with what I do. It’s a little unhealthy, actually. But who wouldn’t love showing up to work in a pink office where I can play with as much makeup as my heart desires?! Facts, people.
Getting back to the point of this post (I swear, I have one. Bear with me here) I’ve gotten my morning routine down pat and would love to share some tips and tricks….and frankly, HEAR some from you guys. One can never have too many opinions on how to make early mornings suck a little less.
1. Set your alarm:
Kind of a no-brainer here but when you set your alarm, set it just a little bit earlier every day. For example, on days that I have to wash my hair/ generally look really put together I have to get in the shower no later than 7:20. So I’d set my alarm for 7:15. In those five minutes, I fight the urge to slap the SNOOZE and instead do the worst thing possible (say scientists)…I grab my phone and scroll through social media. Generally, this is the only time during my day where I can cruise MY social media channels without feeling guilty at work. It’s a great way for me to ease my brain into activity without getting totally burnt out. The one exception? I do. Not. Touch. My. Email. That is a sure-fire way to guarantee that I’d call out sick or something. Too overwhelming for 7:15am.
2. Take a shower:
Again, no brainer. But instead of just basking in hot water while using that time as a chance to catch some more ZZZZ’s (we’ve all been there), alternate your water temp from hot to cold. Always end on cold…like, ice-cold. I promise you, it’s impossible to be sleepy when you’re freezing your ass off.
3. Hair/ Breakfast:
My hair is a pain in the ass to dry, and it’s super finicky. I have to like, dry it in a t-shirt and all sorts of ridiculousness in order to preserve my curl without succumbing to frizz….it’s a process. So what I do is get it situated first, then throw on my moisturizer and lip balm. That way it can soak in while I’m scarfing down some breakfast.
- Cheerios and mixed berries (Summertime fav)
- Oatmeal with mashed banana (Wintertime fav)
- A smoothie (with Chia seeds, or I’m hungry by 10:30am for lunch)
I swear, putting on your makeup is such a cathartic process. I don’t wear a ton on a daily basis, but I still thoroughly enjoy the process of putting it on and transforming from a grouchy, sleepy ogre to a PR princess. That’s totally an exaggeration but whatevs. You get my drift.
5. Out the door:
I drive to work, but if you commute on a train/ plane/ automobile that you don’t have to drive then use that time to unwind and relax before the workday smacks you in the face. I used to bring my Kindle with me everywhere when I still commuted, and read on my way into and out of the city. It frequently was the highlight of my day… (don’t worry, much happier where I am now!)
And that’s it. I know this may seem like the world’s most basic checklist for mornings, but learning to enjoy your morning is really in the details. If you pack your lunches, do it the night before so you aren’t scrambling around in the AM. Take some time to let your brain wake up before throwing a ton of information at it…and most importantly of all, EAT BREAKFAST. I didn’t for the longest time and I’ve actually lost weight since changing my routine because I’m on a regular schedule now.
What does your morning routine look like?
and more importantly, HAPPY MONDAY!
