All it Takes is Asking for Help

I get it, asking for help isn’t easy. Being from the Northeast (right outside of NYC actually) I’m used to people being preeeeeeetty terrible. Like, that’s a horrible thing to say but it’s true. Generally speaking, people around here don’t go out of their way to help others on a regular, everyday basis and I find that to be a little sad.

Because of that, it always surprises me when I travel and go somewhere where tourists are given the warmest welcome (I’m looking at you, California!) or even when I hop on the Internet and actually see people going out of their way to lend a helping hand to someone in need.

Like I was saying, I was cruising through a few of the private Facebook groups that I’m a part of (y’know, to stay in touch with people who understand why I continue to post to a blog with zero traffic #CONTENT) when a girl asked for help in creating a gift for her boyfriend. As a broke college student, she wanted to create a piece of art that would remind him of her love without breaking the bank…and what she thought of was pretty freaking awesome.

She posted the above inspiration picture in this group (of thousands of bloggers, content creators, and generally awesome people) and asked for help. If anyone had a few minutes of time on their hands, she asked for them to recreate that shot holding up a note to her boyfriend in front of iconic shots native to wherever the photographer was from.

And let me tell you, in 5 hours that post generated hundreds and hundreds of comments…and even more photos. I literally couldn’t believe the amount of love that a single ask for help generated from all over the world. Women were uploading pictures from Italy to Greece, to Bali, and everywhere in-between. It was INCREDIBLE.

Watching this girl’s dream gift come to life right before my eyes was amazing, and it was all because she had the courage to reach out for a helping hand. All too often, we hold the weight of the world on our shoulders…and then get angry when we fail our own high standards because we took on too much responsibility.

Think about it, how many times have you found yourself overwhelmed at work or in life with pressure literally caving in around you because you have a daunting task to accomplish? And how many times did you fail that task, and then get frustrated with yourself because you disappointed your team/boss/organization? I can speak from experience… all too many times.

If I just had the courage to ask for help, perhaps that project or task might have turned out differently.

Throughout this journey in finding myself and getting back to who I truly am as a person, I’m making it a priority to recognize when I need to step back from a situation or problem and realize that life would be a hell of a lot easier if I just asked for help.

The world can seem like a scary place, but there are good people out there willing to give you a hand…all you need to do is ask.
